Hillary Handelsman is a board-certified Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and Certified Nurse-Midwife with nearly 20 years of experience in women’s and reproductive healthcare. She is passionate about creating a healthcare experience in which every patient feels safe, respected, heard, and actively involved in decisions about their health.
A Career Dedicated to Women’s and Reproductive Health
Hillary earned her master’s degree from the University of California, San Francisco in 2007. Her career has included reproductive healthcare, midwifery, maternal-child public health leadership, perinatal mental health, and community-based work focused on improving access to care. This broad background has given her a deep understanding of the physical, emotional, and social factors that shape health across the reproductive lifespan.
Comprehensive and Inclusive Gynecologic Care
Her clinical interests include preventive gynecologic care, adolescent and young-adult gynecology, contraceptive counseling and reproductive decision-making, and care during perimenopause and menopause. She also has a special interest in mental wellness during reproductive transitions, including pregnancy, postpartum recovery, fertility experiences, pregnancy loss, and menopause.
Hillary is deeply committed to LGBTQ+ affirming gynecologic and reproductive healthcare, including gender-affirming and identity-affirming care. She strives to create a safe and respectful environment for patients who have felt marginalized, dismissed, or uncomfortable in healthcare settings.
Care Grounded in Listening and Partnership
Hillary approaches care through a trauma-informed lens and understands that gynecologic visits, examinations, and procedures can feel vulnerable. She takes time to listen, explain options clearly, and understand what matters most to each patient. Her approach centers on education, advocacy, and shared decision-making so patients feel informed, confident, and supported in their healthcare choices.
Outside of work, Hillary’s greatest joy is her family. She loves spending time with her spouse, their four children, and their many pets. Together, they enjoy exploring the world, seeking out new experiences, and creating art.
